Chinese Cultural Appreciation

Chinese Cultural Appreciation

“Singaporean children must remain bi-lingual and bi-cultural in Chinese …. Ministry of Education will launch a program in order to achieve this goal. The students from this program .... should be familiar with Chinese classical literature, their history including modern history, as well as the social trend there. We cannot ask everyone to be proficient in both languages, but those who do will certainly be very popular, with better employment prospects.”

(PM Lee Hsien Loong in his National Day Rally speech in 2004)

Chinese Singaporeans already have a strong bilingual foundation but need to motivate themselves to take their mother tongue to a higher level It's not just the language we speak but we should also understand the culture and mindset behind it.'

Chinese Idioms (Cheng Yu) and their stories

Like any other languages in the world, Cheng Yu is an essence of its language that contains myriad of colorful and profound idioms.

Chengyu are mostly derived from ancient literature. The meaning of  Chengyu usually surpasses the sum of the meanings carried by the four characters; they are often intimately linked with the myth, story or historical fact from which they were derived. They are taught in local Primary and Secondary schools as part of the Chinese curriculum. To better understand the idioms, we need to study the context from which the Chengyu was born. Often the four characters reflect the moral behind the story rather than the story itself.
